Though the next major release of Microsoft Dynamics AX has been out of public view, progress continues on AX ‘7′, a.k.a. “Rainier”, according to Microsoft Dynamics AX R&D general manager Dan Brown.
“We’ve been quiet on AX ‘7′,” acknowledged Brown today at AXUG Summit. But the team has been working toward delivering the next major release in 2015, he said. They have also been working to deliver new cumulative updates for AX 2012 R3 on an ongoing six month cadence.

AX ‘7′ will be primarily a technology release, according to Brown, with two primary focus areas. The first goal is the updated user experience that is browser based and that supports mobile clients across many device platforms. The second goal is to support AX in production on Azure to be managed by partners.
The AX ‘7′ user experience enhancements will include a next generation user interface that Brown described as the next generation of role centers. “Work spaces” will bring data and collaboration together “in a way that’s vastly superior to what’s been done before,” said Brown.
An added benefit of the AX ‘7′ use interface is that for hosted AX systems using Citrix, the new approach should also reduce costs due to lower processing needs.
New cumulative updates for AX 2012 R3 to streamline updates, reduce disruption
Starting in autumn 2014, cumulative updates for AX 2012 R3 will cut down on disruption by increasing flexibility and adding more granularity in terms of which elements of the update are installed. CU8 will include rollup hotfixes, regulatory updates, and a range of new capabilities.
New capabilities in AX 2012 R3 CU8 will include product variants in warehouse; partial batch reservations; automatic order consolidation; tablet MPOS offline capabilities; shared shift support, streamlined US payroll; and improved retail and warehouse integration.

“The rate of innovation can be taxing for those who want to consume it. With new features, you want to incorporate them but don’t want other capabilities. [The new CUs will] allow you to selectively install the things you want, and to minimize disruption in your production environment,” explained Brown. “We’ve done this before but it has been improved significantly. We’re looking at all dependent code and we are narrowing the amount of code we bring in based on a dependency graph . [The CUs will] pull in what’s needed and leave all else to your discretion. … [It offers the] potential for more of the functionality you need with less disruption.”
Cumulative updates will be released every six months using the updated deployment capabilities, Brown told the AXUG audience.
